Despite being born in America, I was raised in China by my grandparents until I was 5 years old. Then when I move to America to live with my parents, I couldn't adapt to the new culture that I was suddenly introduce to. I always have been and will probably always be a quiet person, because of this I always looked to avoid as much human interaction as possible, and technology was the answer to that. When I heard about facial recognition technology I was fascinated by it and was pleased to find out that how China have been implementing this technology to reinvent how their citizens live their daily life. Which is why I choose my topic on how the success of facial recognition technology in China. Despite finding a good topic for myself I would be lying if I said the research process went smoothly. I struggled to string together words together to explain the significance of my topic while also struggling to find specific examples of China's use for facial recognition technology, especially for crime related uses. This is probably because of China's strict and oppressive channel of information, while China is quick to showcase their advanced facial recognition technology, the Chinese government especially aren't keen to share the use of facial recognition for crime related uses. However the use of facial recognition technology that China boast to the world are staggering. I was really shocked to find out how advanced and creative China use facial recognition technology really is, for example they have robots (adorable ones too) patrolling train station using facial recognition to identify criminals (See bottom of page). Although there were no developments taking place while I was researching my essay, it is reasonable to expect the widespread implementation of facial recognition technology throughout parts of China that hasn't been touch by this technology yet.
